Embrace the moment
A long exposure in Exchange Square, Manchester, near the Printworks. One couple stands still long enough to register against the background, their embrace cutting through the motion blur of other pedestrians drifting around them as ghostly outlines.
You don't set this up. You hold the shutter open and wait. The police car passing in the background adds a streak of blue to the traffic light trails behind the couple. The neon of Café Rouge and the Hard Rock Cafe sign date the scene. This image won a photography award.

Shadows & Stained Glass, Manchester Cathedral
A night shot of the exterior apse of Manchester Cathedral, looking up at two illuminated stained glass windows set into the curved stonework. The floodlighting bathes the stone in a warm amber glow, while tree branch shadows fall across the facade and the carved columns between the windows.
The windows glow from within, their colours reading clearly against the dark sky. Post-processing in Photoshop has been applied to enhance the image, though the shadow patterns and the warmth of the lit stonework are striking enough in the base shot alone.

Madchester
'Madchester' graffiti on the wall of a partly demolished building in Salford, shot in black and white to emphasise the texture of the deteriorating brickwork. The wildstyle lettering fills the frame, its decorative bubble forms set against weathered brick, peeling render, and weeds growing at the base of the wall.
The word carries weight beyond the lettering. Madchester was the late 1980s and early 1990s cultural movement centred on Factory Records, the Haçienda, and bands including The Stone Roses and Happy Mondays. Finding it on a building in the process of being torn down gives the image an unintended elegiac quality.

St Ann's Arcade After Hours, Manchester
Taken after closing time in St Ann's Square, Manchester, this drops to a low angle to place the fountain in the foreground, where the arcade's blue neon reflects across the disturbed water surface. The shuttered entrance and empty pavement strip the location of its daytime character.
The colour contrast between the cool teal neon and the warm amber street light on the upper façade drives the image tonally. The exposure holds detail in the illuminated sign while letting the surrounding architecture fall into deep shadow, framing the lit elements and keeping the composition clean.

Manchester Wheel Long Exposure, Exchange Square
A long exposure of the Manchester Wheel in Exchange Square, taken at night while the wheel was in rotation. The slow shutter turns each gondola into a streak of light, building the full wheel into a solid disc of concentric white circles against the dark sky.
The composition frames the wheel to the left, with the glass and steel façade of the adjacent building anchoring the right of the frame. Pedestrians blurred in the foreground add scale and a sense of movement. The vertical format emphasises the height of the wheel relative to the surrounding city-centre architecture.

Beetham Tower, Canal Reflection, Manchester
A stitched vertical panorama of Beetham Tower shot at night from the Castlefield canal basin, converted to monochrome. The tower fills the upper half of the frame, its randomly lit windows scattered across the dark glass facade. Victorian canal infrastructure sits between the tower base and the water, placing old and new Manchester in the same frame.
The still canal below produces a near-perfect reflection, mirroring the tower's window lights in the lower half of the image. The monochrome treatment strengthens the contrast between lit and unlit glass, emphasising the tower's grid against the reflected version below.

Manchester Wheel Up Close, Exchange Square
From the same Exchange Square night shoot as the full-wheel long exposure, this tighter framing moves closer to the structure and looks up through the spokes and support cables. The slow shutter blurs the gondolas into sweeping arcs while the fixed steelwork of the A-frame legs stays relatively sharp.
Ghostly pedestrians drift through the foreground, their movement during the long exposure reducing them to translucent silhouettes. The glass façade of the adjacent building, lit purple to the right, adds depth and frames the wheel's geometry against the lit interior beyond.

Lock 92 Overhead, Rochdale Canal, Manchester
Shot from directly above Lock 92 on the Rochdale Canal in Manchester, this long exposure captures the rushing water as two fans of motion spreading from the lock gate. The wooden structure divides the frame symmetrically, its geometry anchoring the blur beneath it.
The monochrome conversion strips away colour and lets tone and texture carry the image. A slow shutter preserves highlight detail in the water while retaining depth in the darker channels below. The overhead angle turns a piece of industrial canal infrastructure into near-abstract geometry.

Embrace the Moment, Exhibition Edit
The exhibition version of the award-winning Embrace the Moment, processed in Photoshop for display. The edit applies selective desaturation across the frame, stripping most of the image to monochrome while retaining colour in the traffic and police car light trails streaking through the background. The effect sharpens the contrast between the still couple at the centre and the movement of the city around them.
The neon signs of the Printworks remain partially visible in the upper corners, their colour holding through the treatment.

Spinningfields at Night, Manchester
A night shot looking along one of the pedestrian passages in Spinningfields, Manchester. Bare trees along the left edge are strung with festoon lights, creating a corridor of warm blue light that leads the eye towards the heritage tower visible at the end of the passage.
The contrast between the modern glass and steel of the Spinningfields development on the right and the older masonry tower in the background places two eras of Manchester in the same frame. The empty passage strips the commercial district of its usual activity and lets the lighting carry the composition.
